Google Introduces ’Nano-Banana’ AI Image Editing Tool
Google launched Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, colloquially dubbed Nano-Banana, on August 26, 2025. The tool integrates advanced image editing and generation capabilities into the Gemini ecosystem, now available via the Gemini app and developer platforms like Gemini API, AI Studio, and Vertex AI.
Nano-Banana enables natural language image editing, allowing users to blur backgrounds, remove objects, or alter poses through simple commands. It also supports multi-image fusion, maintaining consistency across frames for branding or character continuity. The model leverages Gemini 2.5's multimodal inputs and reasoning, priced at $30 per 1 million output tokens—approximately $0.039 per 1024×1024 image.
Google has partnered with OpenRouter and fal.ai to broaden distribution, while implementing SynthID watermarks to flag AI-generated content. The release positions Google competitively in the AI-powered creative tools market.
